How We Do It

Applicant Selection

Our Board recognizes the strategic importance of technology and STEM fields to Virginia’s future. We work closely with Virginia STEM high schools to identify and select the most qualified applicants using the criteria below. We are committed to creating and promoting opportunities for Virginia high school and college students to pursue degrees in technology and STEM fields.  To be considered the board reviews the following:

  • Academic Achievement - weighted GPA, SAT or ACT score
  • Financial Need
  • Leadership and Experience - A resume that highlights work experience, community service, and extracurricular activities.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A 250–500 word essay describing themselves and their academic and career goals in a technology or STEM field
  • STEM degree being pursed
